Grounding & Centering
Grounding

Grounding is pretty much what it sounds like, the act of being grounded (connected to the earth.) In our everyday busy lives, we tend to lose sense of our base, which is Mother Earth. Our minds, bodies and spirits are always in the fast lane, and as a result, our physical movements and thoughts have become disconnected from our earthly base, our system of physical and spiritual balance.
Being grounded is very important for our minds, bodies and spirit. When we have a natural physical and spiritual ground to the earth, we feel more balanced, we feel more centered, and energies are able to flow through us more freely. When we are not grounded we become what people call a 'space case'; we tend to feel light-headed, tired, confused, spacey, forgetful, and sometimes dizzy.
It is also important to be grounded when doing various types of spiritual work. When we do spiritual work, we are opening ourselves to a bunch of different types of energies. These energies flow through us, and can sometimes be overwhelming. In some cases, too much energy at one time can even cause a type of short-circuit inside of us, causing our bodies to just want to shut down. If you are grounded while doing spiritual work, the energy has an outlet, it will pass through you and safely back to mother earth, not being so easily trapped in you.
A Simple Grounding Meditation
Sit in a comfortable chair.
Slowly begin to breathe in and out
letting yourself relax as you breathe
breathe in, and as you exhale let the stress be released with each breath.
feel a warm white light coming from the top of you head (your crown chakra)
let the light's warmth relax your face and feel it warming your entire body
the light slowly travels down your body into your root chakra and then into your legs
your legs feel warm and relaxed
envision your feet being part of nature
visualize tree roots growing out of the bottom of your feet
let these roots burrow down, deep into the earth
you can now feel the energy of nature connected to you
the excess energy you have in your body travels down your legs, into the earth
you are now grounded and balanced
Centering

There is another important aspect of spiritual balance, and that is centering our energy. When we are centered we feel more complete, as well as balanced physically and spiritually.
Your center is the place where your inner strength comes from. Whenever you get a gut feeling about something, that's your center, tapping into your intuitive source. That's where the expression, "go with your gut" came from -- trust your center.
A Simple Centering Meditation
Sit in a comfortable chair,
take in a few deep breaths and release all tension and stress as you exhale.
Feel your body relax
Visualize a white ball of energy in the middle of your forehead; your third eye
Feel how warm and relaxing this ball of energy is
let the white ball of energy slowly move down your body
as it goes past your neck, shoulders and past your heart
let it finally find rest in your abdomen, this is your center
Feel how calm and balanced your body is now.
