Cleansing

For body, home, objects, tools, etc.
One of the most important, yet, most overlooked steps in any spiritual or magical endeavor is cleansing. Before any protection techniques are used, one must thoroughly cleanse the person, home, object or tool they are protecting.
Cleansing is releasing any previous energies attached to a person, place or thing. This is very important when moving into a new home, buying new and used products, before and after using magical tools, being in contact with negative people, working through personal issues and being exposed to the spirit realm through divination, psychic or magical works and readings.
When an object or place is owned or used by another person, their energies...moods, thought-patterns, feelings, intentions, etc. are infused into the object or place. When you use magical tools for divination or rituals, your energy is infused into those, as well as the energy of those individuals that you are divining for or working your magic for. While performing any kind of psychic or spirit work, the energies from the spirits or entities you are working with will be saturated into your tools and your own self. You also take on many moods, thoughts and feelings from all of the people you are exposed to throughout your everyday activities...including your own.
If you are feeling like you have a heavy weight on your spirit, or seem to be overly sensitive, you may very well need a cleansing. There are many techniques to cleanse oneself and one's belongings, but, as usual, I will keep to the basics and encourage you to use the techniques in your own creative ways.
Cleansing with Water
You can cleanse many things with water as long as they will not get ruined.
A very satisfying way to cleanse yourself of any negative emotions and energies is to take a shower. Just visualize all of the negativity being washed away as the water cascades down your body and through the bath drain. Natural water sources are the best cleansing tools, but if we can't get to a water source; visualizations of waterfalls, lagoons, sea and ocean waves are wonderful ways to cleanse ourselves.
Drinking fresh, clean water is an ideal way to cleanse your physical body of impurities. If you drink a lot of coffee, soda, or other caffeine-laden or sugary beverages, you can easily begin adding water into your regimen by simply replacing every other helping of your usual drinks with a glass of water.
The first thing you should do when you move into a new place is completely wash everything from top to bottom. Get all of the previous tenants energy right out of there! I recommend doing a thorough smudging afterward, then use your protection techniques to assure that everything is safe and snug.
You can also cleanse any tools or objects with water, or soap & water, as long as they are made to be submersible. This is a great habit to get into for those who enjoy used products.
Smudging
Smudging is simply smoldering specific herbs to cleanse and protect yourself, your rooms, home, tools and any other objects, while envisioning and directing the unwanted energies to disperse the area. Herbs commonly used for smudging are sage, sagebrush, cedar, raw tobacco, and yerba santa.
If you feel you may have a ghost or negative energy in your home or around yourself, smudging is an excellent step in cleansing yourself of them. Be sure to refrain from using sweetgrass for cleansing purposes, as it is generally used to invite spirits in. If you have already tried smudging, and it has made things worse, you may be dealing with more than your average "ghost" or "haunting" and may need to consult a professional who is experienced in safely clearing harmful entities and energies.
When smudging a room, light the herb(s) in a fire-proof dish, then allow the flame to go out and let the herb smolder. Start at one corner (ideally the far end) and walk slowly around the edges of the room in a clockwise direction, allowing the smoke to push any energies out of the room as you work your way around. Envision all negativity being cleansed away as you do this. Ask that your efforts cleanse and protect the area you are smudging. Windows, closets and doorways are to be paid close attention to as they are entrances into the room or home. Trace a path along the opening until you get back to your starting point. Then continue along the wall where you last left off. While smudging a room or home, be sure to have an outlet for all of the energies to be released outside.
Smudging an object or person is done in the same way. Walk around the object or person in a clockwise direction allowing the smoke to completely cover the object or person. If it is a small object, simply hold the object in the smoke until it is covered.
Emotional Cleansing
Depression, anger, fear, low self-esteem, jealousy, and emotions like these are all negative emotions. These states of mind are not healthy to be in for long amounts of time. If you feel stuck in a negative mood for any long period, you may need an emotional cleansing. There are many entities that love to feed off from people who harbor these emotions. Many spirit possessions are due to this very reason. Aside from basic cleansing and protection rituals, those who need emotional cleansings may require a lot more work. The first step should be identifying the root cause of these emotions. Look at what issues are being ignored or focused on too much. Find out where these issues stem from initially. You may have to go back to your childhood experiences. Sometimes it is possible that you may have to even go back to past life issues as well. Self-help books are a wonderful way to work on self-improvement, but if you need further help, it would be wise to consult a professional emotional therapist.
A sensational way to cleanse deep emotions is to wade through a large body of water with small, crashing waves cleansing all of the emotions and pent-up feelings inside of you. When we are feeling all alone or insignificant, it helps to have something stronger than ourselves to be a part of, to make us realize how small we really are in this massive universe. It helps to put our problems back into perspective. Smaller bodies of water and swimming pools can be effective cleansing sources as well. Just immerse yourself in the water and envision it cleansing the deep emotions you are experiencing.
Spiritual Cleansing
Spiritual cleansings are used to cleanse your spirit of excess baggage. They are used often for emotional cleansings and to rid yourself of negativity and energies associated with magical or spirit work. Smudging is often used for this purpose, but there are also many visual techniques that are utilized. Basically, these consist of entering a deep meditational state and then visualizing any negative energies (spirits, emotions &/or experiences) being dissolved and released into the cosmos. The goal is to acknowledge the emotions, experiences or entities, instead of ignoring them or pushing them aside and not dealing with them. These will usually result in very interesting and bizarre dreams as your subconscious sorts out all of your thoughts and feelings on the subject focused on.
A suitable way to cleanse you spirit, is to find a beautiful and serene nature spot, sit in it and just observe and feel at one with everything. Alternatives can be watching soothing nature videos, listening to nature sounds, and visualizations of peaceful, natural landscapes.
