Safety

General safety and security for home, vehicle, and public locations.
Use the buddy system.
Stay in well-lit areas; at home, in parking lots and while walking.
Vary your daily routine so you are less predictable for predators.
Always be acutely aware of your surroundings and everyone around you.
Walk swiftly, with determination and confidence, keeping any bags close to your body.
Carry your keys in your hand. You should be ready to use them when you get to your front door or vehicle.
Quickly survey your vehicle before entering. Check all seats, floor and behind seats. If clear, enter your vehicle and lock the doors. Do not dawdle. If not clear, do not ask questions or provoke the person. Simply turn around and reenter the place you just came from. Alert the authorities. Stay in the building until the authorities tell you everything is safe.
While running errands, turn off your engine, roll up the windows, take your keys with you and lock the doors, even if only running into a store for one minute.
Put any packages or potentially desirable items in the trunk, or hidden well, if necessary to keep in the front.
Keep purses on the floor (not the seats) while driving.
Close and lock all windows and doors securely, at home and in your vehicle, while in them and away.
Install a peephole or video surveillance system at the doors to your home.
Never open the door to unexpected strangers.
If an authority figure comes to your door, you have the right to ask them for identification, so make sure you do! If any doubts, call their agency to confirm their visit and identity.
Never admit to anyone at your door or on the phone that you are alone. Make up a story to support your statement if you need to. It's alright to lie if your safety is in danger.

"Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing." - Helen Keller
