Some of the more popular beliefs about ghosts are that most spirits go to the light when they pass over, but others may feel like they still have work to do before they go. If the soul has free-will to choose where it would like to head to next, some may stay around to aid, keep watch over, or send a message to a friend or loved one. Perhaps they wish to right a wrong or avenge their death. There may be ghosts that don't even realize they have passed or don't know where they are supposed to be or how to get there.
These instances may explain some experiences living people have in which they see, feel, hear or otherwise sense a passed entity. Although this may often be the case, more often a witnessed "haunting" may actually be what is called a residual haunting. This is where living beings witness a specter acting out a scene that repeats over and over. These are often described as spirits at "unrest", who have most likely died a violent or emotionally-charged death. This creates a sort of thin spot between the worlds of perspective, allowing others to see events unfolding from the past right before their eyes.
This first ghost story may well be a type of residual haunting. There are many stories all over the world of a lady or woman in a white, flowing gown, with long, flowing hair and milky-white skin, wandering, searching, crying and seeking help. The woman is usually searching for a loved one. There is a story like this from the area I grew up in, around Rochester, New York. There was also a film made in 1988, depicting the legend, that was directed, produced, and written by Frank LaLoggia, a native of Rochester, NY. It's aptly named "The Lady in White".
The Lady in White
The story begins in the 1800's. There is a woman who lived with her daughter in the area where the Durand Eastman Park now stands, located on the shore of Lake Ontario in the northernmost section of the City of Rochester near the Irondequoit border.
It is said that the daughter was thought to be beaten, raped and murdered as she never returned home one evening. Her mother went out searching for her all through the marsh land, some say with two German Shepherds at her sides. Eventually worn tired, distraught and without hope of ever finding her, the mother leapt to her death, off a cliff, into Lake Ontario.
To this day, people walking through the area claim to have seen a Lady in White, with long white hair and pale white skin, wearing a long, flowing white dress, pleading for help to find her lost daughter. She is reported to be seen rising in a shadowy white mist, on foggy nights, out of Lake Ontario, wandering around, searching and weeping. She is also said to protect women who pass through the park, and has been known to fight off ill-intending men as well.
In the movie of the same name, the Lady in White story is woven into a story about a young boy in the early 1960's who, on Halloween night, witnesses a ghostly vision of a young girl being murdered. The young girl represents the daughter of The Lady in White. The rest of the movie revolves around the boy discovering the story behind the murder and the murderer, themselves, with the help of the ghostly spirit girl. The Lady in White makes her appearance to help the boy at the crucial moment he is about to be killed by the man who killed her daughter. She saves the boy by scaring the murderer, causing him to stumble over the edge of a cliff.
FUN-FILLED FACTS:
Be sure to note the scene in the movie where the older brother is helping the younger brother out of some wet cement. The younger bother is telling the older to not swear, where the older brother replies with "Mingia!", an Italian slang used by native Rochestarians. If you grew up around Rochester, you had to have said or heard the word at least once in your life. I learned it from an Italian friend. I'm not even Italian and I still find myself saying it from time to time...heh heh.
