A Bit of Advice
© 2015 GypsyJaguar
All of our lives, people are going to tell us what they think we should do. Whether it be what choices to make, how we should live our lives, raise our kids, spend our money, or occupy our time. Some of it's good advice, some of it poor. Some may be asked for or even needed, but most will be volunteered.
The advice we receive can be a useful tool in our lives. There is much wisdom hidden within the shared opinions of those around us. Suggestions or criticisms can tell us a lot about ourselves and other people. They can show us how particular people view us or how we come across to others. They can also reveal the beliefs, priorities, issues, and ideals of the individuals they are coming from. |
There are times, though, when opinions can be harmful. Hurtful words stemming from pent-up anger, frustrations, jealousy, or the like can cause a lot of pain and confusion, especially if someone is feeling unsure of themselves to begin with. The truth does not have to hurt if it is delivered with a little compassion. If someone makes you feel inadequate, small, insignificant, or worthless, the problem may be more with them than with you.
The advice that people give is frequently based on their own issues and life lessons. Some may want to make sure that others do not experience the same problems that they have, so they try to guide them in a particular direction in attempt to save them from a similar fate. This can be helpful in some instances, but we all have to ultimately learn our own lessons in life. What is seen as a mistake is often a valuable experience to be a part of. We also tend to pay attention more, therefore being more open to learning and absorbing the lessons, when we experience things first-hand.
Although most people mean well and believe they are helping in some way, they are most likely only seeing a small fraction of the whole picture in any given situation. Unless they are living your life inside your own heart, soul, mind, and body, it would be virtually impossible to truly know what is best for you. |
Each person has their own intricate construction of personal beliefs, interests, experiences, morals, and ideals that make up who they are, as well as what they feel makes them a good or successful individual. The advice others give is going to be based on their own experiences and codes of living. What might work best for their life may not work out as well for ours.
Advice we give can be just as revealing as the advice we receive. Our opinions and judgments of someone else's situation can often show us our own issues we need to work on. Sometimes those matters can be ones we have worked on before, or even feel we have conquered. Witnessing someone else go through a similar problem may even irritate us when they do not appear to handle it the same as we may have. In some cases this could show a reluctance to admitting similar shortcomings of our own. We recognize our own strengths and weaknesses in others. More often than not, the advice we give can indicate our own messages to heed, as well.

It is always wise to make note of any suggestions and criticisms we give, as well as receive, as most of them are valuable lessons and revelations. Consider their worth, sort out the good advice from the poor advice, and decide what would be beneficial to you. Listen to your heart, mind, body, and soul. Tune in to your higher self. The answers are in there. You just have to be open to listen.
If we choose to act on the advice of someone else, we, alone, make the decision to follow that advice of our own free will. The same goes for those who take any advice we give. In the end, we are solely responsible for making our own choices, no matter what anyone else says. We always have the final word. |
If something doesn't feel right, don't do it. Pay attention to how your body reacts to the thought of it. If you have any doubt, take some more time to think about the consequences of your actions. Make any decisions with your best interests in mind, as well as those around you. Be aware of what matters most to you in life and make your choices in alignment with those values. Above all, we are the only ones who know what is best for ourselves.
