The Amityville Horror

George and Kathy Lutz had just gotten married and moved into the home of their dreams. Everything seemed perfect, almost too good to be true. Plenty of room for Kathy's three kids to romp around, space for George to work, a swimming pool and a gorgeous lake out back with a large boathouse. The place was a steal, too. Apparently, the place had a history. One year earlier, the previous owners and their children were violently murdered by their oldest son, who claimed to have heard voices in his head telling him to do it. The family discussed the history and decided that they could live with that. Besides, they didn't believe in ghosts, or anything of that nature. Unfortunately, they learned differently.
The Lutz's stayed in their dream house for exactly 28 days. From the first day, bizarre and unexplained events began to occur, getting more noticeable each day. George seemed to wake up out of a sound sleep on a regular basis, usually hearing some sort of disturbance in the house or encountering one when he would get up and walk around. He would often hear what sounded like musicians tuning up their instruments. Kathy experienced several episodes of being touched by some invisible source. There were instances where she was found levitating above her bed. A few times her face actually aged dramatically, into an old crone. The temperature in the house always seemed too cold to George and odd odors frequently filled the air. Events culminated to a point where the Lutz's could no longer take it, and they left their dream house at 112 Ocean Avenue, leaving most of their possessions behind.
Since then, there have been books and several movies and TV shows based on the events that happened at that house, but other than about $300,000 after taxes and such, the Lutz's made no additional money on their story. There has and always will be controversy over what actually occurred to the Lutz's as well as the previous owners, the Defeo's. There have been many families that have resided at 112 Ocean Avenue, in Amityville, New York, where all of the events took place. There have been no reports of any unexplained phenomena from any of the families that have lived there since.
In an interview with Art Bell from Coast to Coast AM in 2002, George Lutz clears up some misconceptions that have arose from the overly dramatized novels and movies about his family's story. When the Lutz's were first moving into their new home on 112 Ocean Avenue, their family priest came to bless the house. The priest asked them what they were going to use the back bedroom for and said he felt uncomfortable in that room. This room eventually became the sewing room and was the place of many disturbances, including a window being constantly covered with flies no matter what they tried to do to clean them up. Their son, Danny had his hands flattened by a window in the sewing room slamming down on its own. When they went to leave for the hospital, Danny's hands were all better. One of the psychic investigators claims to have seen an image of an entity in the sewing room window from the outside, as well.
George explains that there was no oozing of slime out of the walls like is portrayed in the movie. Instead, there were old style keyholes in the doors of the house that dripped with black, epoxy substance of some sort. The drips would continually get longer with each passing day. There were also tracks of sticky, gelatin-like substances from room to room now and then. The lights did flicker from time to time, but the electric never went completely out.
During the last week of their stay at the house in Amityville, the Lutz's were having nightly occurrences. They increasingly experienced noises, odors, Kathy's invisible visitors touching her. Their dog Harry, a black malamute, wouldn't go in the back bedroom. Their daughter, Missy, was regularly talking to herself or asking questions about angels. She claimed to be talking to an angel named Jody. She said that Jody told her that they were all going to live there forever.
During the last night at 112 Ocean Avenue, Kathy had levitated off the bed and floated toward the wall and turned into an
old crone, as she had done before. The boys' beds were banging up and down upstairs and George was sweat-drenched, but could not get up out of bed. It was as if an unseen entity was holding him down. There was a big storm outside, but only around their house...others around the neighborhood didn't experience a storm, they later learned. Harry was tied to the master bedroom door, but kept getting up, walking in circles, throwing up and and lying back down again all night.
The Lutz's ended up leaving the house in the late afternoon the next day. Even their priest suggested they leave, after they had asked for him to come back to bless the house once more. They packed a few items and all went to Kathy's mother's house. They had planned to return to their home in the event that someone could clear the disturbing energies from it. Those who tried did not succeed. So, the Lutz's sold the rest of their belongings and gave the house back to the bank. There have been many tenants living at 112 Ocean Avenue since, but not one of them has yet to report any disturbances.
