Protection

When we do any type of spiritual, psychic or energy work it is imperative to protect ourselves from lower vibrational spirits and negative energies, including emotions from ourselves and others. But it is important in our regular every day lives as well. The most common way to do this is to just ask. Ask God, The Goddess, The Great Spirit, your guardian angels, your spirit guides, your higher self, whoever you turn to for spiritual help and protection. And believe that you are protected.
A very popular technique to help you visualize yourself being protected is the white light technique. There are slightly varying ways to do this, but all follow a basic outline. Envision a white, pure, loving light above your aura. It can also be a golden-white light, a blue-white light or a pink, unconditional love-filled white light. Whatever feels most true to you. This is energy coming directly from the Divine Spirit. This light is filled with Love, Truth, Peace, and Protection. Envision this light from above coming down into your aura, spreading into all areas of your spirit and physical body. Allow it to flow freely...it should give you a sense of peace and warmth. Ask that this light protect you from all negativity and harm. Feel it spread throughout your body and continue to grow until it forms a bubble around you and your entire aura. You will want this to spread to a few feet around your physical body, as the aura is the energy field surrounding your body, and can be penetrated while you are open to spirit. Once you have formed your bubble, you can strengthen it by having the outer edges harden to a crystal to keep yourself in a protective shell. You can also envision the outside of the bubble covered with mirrors facing outward away from you to send any energy back to where it came.
This technique can be used on yourself, your loved ones as they leave the house, your pets, your home, or any object you want protected. Many people use this before they go to bed, when they first wake up, and always before and after any spirit work, or readings of any kind.
An old acquaintance used to plant what she calls 'white light bombs', setting them off in corners of her house like little potted plants. It's basically a white light technique manifested into a different form. There is no end to how you can envision your protection applications.
Another form of protection is cloaking. Cloaking is envisioning a cloak (or hooded cape) of protection surrounding you much like the white light technique. Simply envision the cloak covering you in a blanket of protection...ask for the protection as you do this. This can allow you to be in invisible mode, as well.
Whenever you come across someone who feels negative to you, protect yourself. Whenever you go somewhere, protect yourself. When there is someone complaining to you, protect yourself. You don't want to take on their negative emotions. When you perform magic, send healing, give psychic readings, or call upon spirits, please protect yourself. Any time you feel the need to be protected; do not hesitate to do so. But most importantly; believe that you are protected and you will be.
Smudging is another form of protection. This is simply burning specific herbs to cleanse and protect yourself, magical or spiritual tools, individuals, rooms, homes, and any other objects you want protected, as you envision any unwanted energies leaving the area. Herbs commonly used for smudging are white sage, sagebrush, cedar, and raw tobacco. Sweetgrass is generally used to attract positive spirits.
Light the herb(s), then allow the flame to go out and let the herb smolder.
When smudging a room, start at one corner and walk slowly around the edges of the room in a clockwise direction, allowing the smoke to create a wall of protection. Envision all negativity being cleansed away as you do this. Ask that your efforts cleanse and protect the object or person you are smudging. Window, doors, and doorways are to be paid close attention to as they are entrances into the room or home. Trace a path along the opening until you get back to your starting point. Then continue along the wall where you last left off. While smudging a room or home, be sure to have an outlet for all of the energies to be released outside.
Smudging an object or person is done in the same way. Walk around the object or person in a clockwise direction allowing the smoke to completely cover the object or person. If it is a small object, simply hold the object in the smoke until it is covered.

Salt is also used for protection. One of the most common uses is in cooking. Salt preserves, as well as protects. Sea Salt is the most commonly used form of salt in magical endeavors. Certain tools can be cleansed and protected with salt as long as the salt will not corrode them. A common way to use salt as for protection is to sprinkle it across doorways, window sills, or in a protective circle around yourself or objects.
Mirrors are an old Celtic act of protecting. You can use actual mirrors as well as envisioning mirrors...just be sure to face them away from what you are protecting. If you have some negative neighbors, hang or envision mirrors on your home facing away from your house. This will allow any negativity to reflect back to where it came. A mirror on your front door would be an excellent form of protection for the home. You may use crystals in the same fashion. Remember that crystals and mirrors absorb energy, so clear them often by rinsing them under water and polishing them as you envision all of the negative energy being cleansed away.
Some other forms of protection are fire (envisioned or actual), prayer, holy water, protective herbs, symbols (like pentagrams, crosses, etc.) on plaques or jewelry, such as amulets.
Colors commonly used for protection are black, which banishes and protects, white, which purifies and protects, and red, which exorcises and protects.
There are many forms of protection throughout the cultures of the world. These are just a few common techniques used by solitary practitioners and spirit workers. Use what feels right for you. And remember; every time you feel the need to be protected, do so and believe you are protected, and you will be.
