Online Safety

Basic computer and online safety tips.
Never give out any of your passwords. Change your passwords frequently and use different ones for each of your websites. Choose passwords that have no connection to you personally, utilizing a combination of letters and numbers. This makes it more difficult to break.
Do not enter your social security number into any online application or website.
Do not give out any personally identifying information. Do not inform others of your home address or the names or locations of your school or place of work. If you have a profile page, then please be extremely careful what you say, post and divulge. Even personal photos can tip people off to where you live or work.
Be aware of what you are sharing online. If you post every move you make throughout your day you will make it very easy for people to figure out your daily schedule and habitual hang-outs. It is not safe for everyone online to know these things about you. In order to protect yourself, be selective in what you share about yourself.
It is not advisable to meet online acquaintances in person. There are many people out there who work to gain your trust just to get you to meet them alone so they can hurt you. No matter how long you have talked to someone, there are always things they can hide from you over the internet. If you must meet in person, meet in a very public place with other friends or family members. If you are a young person, make sure you have your parents permission and they go with you.
Be very careful with public profile pages. Social networking sites are designed to retrieve information about their users. There are also many apps and websites that social posts lead to that collect information from your computer and anyone on your friends lists. These sites leave you vulnerable to identity theft, computer viruses and other computer corruption, some of which can cause you to unwillingly send virus-filled junk emails to everyone in your address book. Be sure to utilize your security options in the settings of any networking sites you use.
Use a trusted firewall, spyware and virus protection on your computer, update them and run them frequently.
Delete your cookies often. Cookies are information like usernames, passwords, and ip addresses that websites collect to make your browsing experience easier and more personal. By deleting them from your computer often, you are protecting your identity.
Use your email's filters to reduce junk and spam emails.
Do not open or forward junk email, including chain letters and friends' FWDs. These are one of the most dangerous emails to send. They are filled with harmful viruses and a catalog of email addresses. If you must send something on, copy and paste the information into a new email and delete any email addresses from the body of the email.
Use the "Bcc:" section to address your emails for the safety of your friends and family. This makes your addresses invisible to others who receive the email.
Do not forward or participate in email petitions. They are not admissible in court and are useless without actual hand-written signatures. They are just another way to collect names, locations and email addresses.
