Most hauntings seemed to be linked, in one way or another, to some traumatic episode experienced by the individual being haunted, or the one doing the haunting. There are haunted battlefields, hotels, stretches of road, objects, you name it...the list goes on. My favorite stories tend to be about haunted houses.
I believe haunted houses can be categorized as a few different types of hauntings. First, there is the type where the haunting is surely coming from the house itself. This is where no matter who lives in that particular house, there is always paranormal activity. These are generally caused by a spirit who has lived in the house in the past or has some connection to that house. These can be helpful spirits or problem-causing spirits, depending on the circumstances. But, regardless of which kind they are, they can be interacted with. The kind that are more like watching a movie play out before you, where you can not interact, would be more of a residual haunting. Positive or negative, this is like a window between the worlds in which you can see something that happened in the past. This is caused by intense emotions opening the veil between the past & present.
Another occurrence which is often referred to as a haunted house experience, is actually more of a haunted individual. No matter where the person moves to, they always seem to be surrounded by paranormal activity. I'm not talking about authentic psychics, mediums or channelers who have controlled spirit activity around them on a regular basis. I'm talking about disturbances of unwanted occurrences and uninvited guests which are more malevolent in nature. These often happen when people have ignorantly "played" around in the spirit realms without proper protection and instruction.
Another type of haunting you hear about are poltergeist hauntings. I believe these are actually something of a completely different origin. Poltergeist activity, more often than not, seem to be centered around adolescent girls or boys, who through some sort of traumatic experience, have developed enhanced telekinetic abilities. I'm not saying that there are no trickster spirits or things of that nature. There are as many different kinds of ghosts and spirits out there as there are personalities and kinds of people living. After all, many of them were living at one time anyway. I also believe there are entities that never had a mortal life; benevolent and malevolent. But, more cases than not, with the exception of demonic possessions, which is of another arena, but not that far off the same mark, these "poltergeist" hauntings are of the haunted child's manifestations, at times possibly aided by otherworldly entities or energies.
Adolescence is a powerful thing! Heightened emotions, raging hormones, and the overwhelming urge to be understood and accepted can create a most powerful energy field. Combine that with a traumatic experience and you've got a powder keg of unbridled intentions. Remember "Carrie", by Stephen King?! The man does his research, I'll tell you that! A menstruating adolescent girl is at her peak of power.
Take from it what you will, this is just my opinion. No mortal being can claim to have the answers. We are all amateurs in this arena. There ARE no experts! With that said, I present to you a story that combines all of the elements mentioned above, and then some...the most famous and my favorite haunted house story; The Amityville Horror.
